Email Article CCS Rider Arto Saari...Skater Of The Year 2001
Back when Arto first made his way to the states from his homeland of Finland, I remember people calling him R2D2. Get it, R2…Arto…..ok, whatever.
One time I asked this kid if the Star Wars name for Saari had any significance aside from the obvious syllable similarities. The kid looked at me and said, “Well, Arto is a damn machine, man…a robot!” At the time I didn’t get. In fact I had written off the kid who spoke these words as an idiot, a fool. But in time I came to respect this silly nickname for Arto Saari. And eventually I saw a steady truth behind it. Arto Saari was a machine. Hell, he still is.
Killing spots and almost killing himself in the process, Arto is able to approach any terrain without an ounce of fear and a style all his own.
Back in 2001 Arto Saari was basically unstoppable. And after a grip of consistent mind popping video and print coverage, he was anointed Thrasher Magazine’s Skater Of The Year. Have a peek at some of Arto’s more memorable parts over the years for a glimpse into the undeniable board-control and all-around talent of Arto Saari, aka R2D2. Now check Arto’s CCS Team Page.
