This weekend is when it all goes down. The Street League Championship finals are this Sunday and based on the rider line-up alone, things are bound to get history making gnarly.
We caught up with Street League top 10 qualifier, Zoo York pro and all-around threat to the course, Chaz Ortiz, to chat a bit about this weekends monumental contest.
Whats up, Chaz? How does it feel to make it to the finals? It feels real good, especially skating with all those dudes, the top guys. To skate and be in the mix with them is the best thing ever. Im super excited about it all.
Whats been your favorite Street League stop so far? I want to say Kansas, that one was real cool. The course was good. It was real fun.
Whats been you favorite obstacle at any of the stops? I dont even know. I cant even remember some of the stuff at the past stops [laughs]. Id say my favorite stuff has been everything in the tech sections.
The last stop was criticized for being super big. Were you feeling it? Yeah, it was crazy. It was definitely overly done. I was feeling the course, but I didnt have as much fun as I could have had. Everything you skated, you had to go real big and scare yourself a little.
Did you see a printout of this weekends course in Jersey? Yeah, Ive seen it. It looks super sick! Its more flowy and has more obstacles that are more fun to skate instead of just, throwing yourself down stuff and getting buck, you know. Its definitely more chill.
Who are some of the guys you skated with in Street League this year that really impressed you? Definitely Nyjah. Hes won three already. Everyone skates real good, so its rad to be in the mix and watch everyone.
You think Nyjah can be beaten? Well, I feel like its anyones game, you know. Everyone in it has the skill; they just need to throw it all out there.
Have you been training for this weekend? Not really, just riding my board and having a feel for it. Im never really training; its just me out there riding my board everyday.
You doing anything else while youre in Jersey? Yeah, I might go down to the City, to New York for like a day. But other than that, its just get in and get out and then chill. When the contests are over I want to go on a nice vacation. This years been crazy. Its going to be nice to go somewhere and kick back and not have to worry about skating. Ill probably go some place tropical. I dont know. Maybe cruise out to the Cayman Islands and just chill.
