Torey Pudwill is one of those pro skateboarders who never stops moving. He’s always got something going and a with a full length video part from Plan B set to drop, a freshly inked contract with DVS, a summer packed with Street League tour dates along with the daily management of Grizzly Grip, we’d say 2013 is shaping up to be one of the biggest years of his career. CCS pinned him down this month to find out more.
The whole world is wondering about the Plan B video, Torey. What’s the scoop?
It’s in the works and we’re all psyched it’s all finally coming together. It’s going to come out this year. I hope everyone is stoked on it cause we’re all working really hard. You got guys like Danny Way who’s obviously a legend and who’s changing skateboarding to this day and then you’ve got the OGs like Colin McKay and Pat Duffy. All those guys are going full force right now. And who isn’t looking forward to PJ Ladd and P-Rod as well as the am squad—all those guys are silent killers. I’m just hyped on the opportunity to be a part of a video with all these guys.

Any parts in particular you’re looking forward to?
The whole thing has just been a major team effort and I’m just psyched that it’s happening. That’s what it comes down to, but I’m so psyched to see Sheckler’s part though. Just to see a full part from Sheckler doing his thing is going to be really exciting. It’s going to be a big thing to see a full length part of him especially the way he’s skating now. A lot of people haven’t seen the stuff he can do.
What’s it like working with a legend like Danny Way?
Danny is tight. He’s awesome to kick it with and he can pretty much do whatever he wants. He’s Danny Way. He’s got that all access pass. Just to see the motivation and dedication he has to film for this video makes me want to never give up and film my part as if my life depended on it.The whole legacy and history of the company and to be a part of that is a huge honor. Before I even got on the team this video was in the works. It’s really made me get on my feet.
Would you jump the mega if he asked you to?
I would never try the mega ramp ever. Even if he asked me. Some people are built for that and some people aren’t. I don’t think I would even make it to the top. I’m scared of heights. The drop in is more scary than the actual gap. Duffy did it and Sheckler kickflip grabbed it. Dudes can do it, but I’m not going to get up there and think that I can do it.
What’s up with your recent China trips? Seems like everyone is going out there these days to get footage.
Yeah, China is an amazing place for skateboarding. If you want to go out and film for a video or stack photos or just generally get things done, China is the place. They’re always constantly building new architecture and plazas so there’s always new things to skate. That’s the good thing about it—there’s always new and unseen spots. On my previous trips we’ve had local guides that scout out spots for us and show us around. I don’t think too many people know that we’ve been out there. We were out there just for the sake of the video.
What’s the latest with DVS? You recently re-signed with them, right?
I’ve been with DVS for a long time and it’s definitely part of my roots in skateboarding. DVS is a big part of me and we have a solid team and family there. We’re all really close and as a team we’re all really hyped on each other. I recently resigned with them and we’re rebuilding with a solid crew especially with guys like Daewon and Chico. We’re all working tough towards new goals for the brand. It’s shoes and skateboarding, man. It’s sick.
What’s up with the Grizzly x DVS collab that just dropped?
It was great getting to be able to do a collaboration with DVS and Grizzly and it only made sense for me to partner with them given all my history and heritage with the brand. We’ll be doing an exclusive DVS x Grizzly Torey 1 colorway special for CCS. It’ll be available in two different styles including tie dye and mind green with black. In terms of being skate specific, they’ll both feature abrasion resistant material.
Aside from the graphics, is there anything specific about Grizzly Grip that makes it different than other grip out there?
Our grip has been thoroughly tested by me. When we were first started the brand we wanted to be sure we could find the right product and a new product that wasn’t like anything else out there. Our grit is made custom to the way I like to skate my board. I don’t like it too grippy, but I don’t like it when the grit comes off either. Our glue is solid so the tape doesn’t rip after long usage. I just wanted to make sure I perfected the tape to how I like it and be able to offer that to everyone else.
