With a year filled with Santa Cruz 40-year-anniversary tours and a recently inked contract with Ipath, Shuriken Shannon’s 2013 has been jam packed with skate action and new opportunities. CCS caught up with Shuriken for a little one-on-one to see what he’s been up to. Here’s what he had to say.
Santa Cruz is celebrating its 40 year anniversary this year. What’s it like being on a team with so much history and heritage?
Santa Cruz is really tight right now. It’s crazy that they’ve been doing it for 40 years. That’s a really long time for a skateboard company to be around. They’ve really progressed a lot and the team right now is stacked. We’ve got all the veterans and all the new heads together. The team is really on the come up right now.
What’s it like going on tour with all those guys and getting to skate with the vets?
It’s super mellow. Usually there’s always a couple vets that come out on tour. Dressen is usually on the scene and Salba is always doing his thing. We’ve done a couple Salba missions complete with the pools and the stretches. They’re all cool to skate with. Hearing stories from those guys from the old school days and to look at where they’re at now is always really interesting.
You just got on Ipath at the beginning of the year. How’s that going for you?
I joined up with the squad back in February and I’m just trying to make some good things happen. We’ve been on a couple of good trips so far out to the midwest and we’ll be heading to Mexico soon. I’ve also got a few colorways coming out and then a pro shoe after that so be on the lookout. I’ve been going through a few different ideas for my shoe. I’m really trying to make something poppin’ and an all around solid shoe—something for everybody.
What’s your favorite Ipath model currently and why?
Right now, I’m rocking the Function—the black Function with the white stitching. They’re loose, light and comfortable to skate in. They’re perfect for me.
What’s in your playlist currently? Any new artists you’ve been jamming to?
I like everything from random hip-hop, to some mainstream stuff and some reggae. I’m on that mixtape program right now. I’ve been listening to a lot of R.A. The Rugged Man. I like Black Milk and Danny Brown too. I’ve really been digging Danny Brown. He’s a Detroit fool and is crazy looking, but super talented.
What’s on the extracurricular agenda for you? Any hobbies or pastimes outside of skating?
I’ve got a camera and I’ve been really enjoying shooting photos. I shoot random stuff from lifestyle to skating. I recently put out a book recently called Black Pages. It’s a full color, hardcover coffee table book. It’s all my stuff. It’s about fifty pages of whatever—skating, lifestyle photos and other random quotes and stuff.
